The Camarasaurus gets its name from the Greek kamara and saurus  it means “Lizard with Cameras”, it has this name because it has different holes both in the vertebrae, which are the bones of the back, and in its skull. It is a Sauropod dinosaur that lived at the end of the Jurassic period about 150 million years ago.

This dinosaur could measure up to 18 meters long and weigh up to 18 tons, even taking into account the chambers in its bones that made its skeleton weigh much less. It is believed that the Camarasaurus was the favorite prey of carnivorous theropods such as Allosaurus. Unlike some other dinosaurs, the Camarosaurus could not stand on its hind legs as the front of its body was extremely heavy.

His skull was short and broad, believed to have a very small brain, yet this did not allow him to rely on his keen sense of smell to avoid being eaten by larger dinosaurs. He had five toes on each foot and one of them had a sharp claw believed to be used to defend itself. His front legs were shorter than his back legs, this tells us he couldn’t get up on his back legs to eat for example.

Oramel Lucas found the first Camarasaurus fossils in the United States, Colorado to be more specific. It was named in 1877 by Edward Drinker, although during the War of Bones, the well-known Othniel Charles Marsh gave it the name of Morosaurus, but it was the first name that remained. Later in 1925 the first complete dinosaur was found, it was the skeleton of a very young Camarasaurus, so at first it was thought that the Camarasaurus were much smaller.

The Morrison Formation is located in the Rocky Mountains and was the place where the Camarasaurus was found. It is also one of the sites with the greatest wealth of fossils, since a great number of fossils have been found in this place, among them Diplodocua, Apatosaurus and Brachiosaurus. But it should be mentioned that definitely by far the most abundant are the Camarasaurus. Complete skeletons have also been found in New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

The Camarasaurus had chisel-shaped teeth, more or less like large, blunt nails measuring up to 20 centimeters. This type of teeth indicates that he ate rather hard plants like conifers, in fact where this type of forest lived was abundant. It is also believed that like many other dinosaurs and birds of our time, he could surely have had gastrophy, that is, stones that helped him digest and that when they became flat and useless were simply eliminated.

It is believed that they could eat about half a ton of plants a day, which is why it is believed that the Camarasaurus could destroy entire forests, so they had to move constantly to find food. In other words, thanks to its size, it had to be constantly nourished. Because its neck was not as long as that of other Sauropods, it is believed that it fed rather on the lower branches of the trees.

The chambers in his bones are what make the Camarasaurus special. The first group was found in his skull, which, in addition to being very square, had an impressive number of windows, which made it lighter and has also helped to preserve it, as these skulls have often been in excellent condition. Their skull was also characteristic because their nose was on top of their head so at first it was thought that they lived in the water and helped them to breathe while submerged, however this theory has been rejected.

Their vertebrae were special because they saved a lot of weight to the Camarasaurus because they had holes or cameras that allowed them to move with agility without being definitely heavy. This series of cameras can also be found at the base of your heel to support your incredible weight, in fact elephants have this same system.

Where else can you find him?

The Camarasaurus with their particular head is very popular in toys and video games in different series and lines.
